Chawne Kimber Presents
“When the Cotton is High: Social Justice and Textiles.”

The presenter for our Jan. meeting is Chawne Kimber. A Ph.D. in mathematics, she heads the Math Dept. at Lafayette College and has been quilting since 2005. Her quilts have won awards at QuiltCon, have been shown in the International Quilt Show in Houston five times, and have been exhibited in dozens of juried art shows, galleries, and magazines. As she tells it, “Cotton has been central in the lives of the women of my family — from picking to ginning to sewing, with quilting emerging as the main mode of self-expression available.” Some of Chawne’s quilts are what she calls “geometric romps,” while others continue that tradition of self-expression, depicting aspects of social justice in a way that has many times caused this viewer to stop in her tracks and be moved. There will be a Q&A after her presentation.

Sam Hunter Presents
"What's Your Word"

What’s your Word of the Year?
In this workshop, we learn how to create a design around a word. We cover design choices like size, color, and lettering styles. A foundation paper-piecing demo is included for those that choose FPP as their method of construction. A discount on my book, Quilt Talk® is included (book not required for the workshop).

Materials:
The short answer is you'll need nothing beyond what's in your studio already, although, of course (!) one could shop for some new fabric, patterns, or books! I'll be making you a short video to introduce the class and talk about materials - hoping to have it for you by Dec 15.

Esterita Austin
"
Classic Rock"

Join Esterita for a humorous look at her journey from her beginning art experiences to the present.  This power point/trunk show zips along as it illustrates how she grew the seed of a concept into bold design themes. The focus is on the power of value over color in constructing dramatic compositions.  With her generously dispensed tips you’ll be inspired to run back to your stash and fuse your own thread of an idea into a WOW composition.

Zak Foster

"Memory Quilts: How to Get Started"

Most of the memory quilts I made are made in honor of someone who has passed away, but not all of them. I’ve had memory quilt commissioned by coworkers of a retiring colleague, and parents who want their college freshman to have a quilt made out of their baby clothes. I recently made a “making memories quilt” for someone who is adopting their first child: they gave me clothing to make a quilt out of with the intention of making a welcoming gift for their new daughter.

And it’s that intention I believe that sets memory quilts apart from other other quilts. All quilts can provide warmth and comfort, but memory quilts provide a kind of spiritual solace in addition to that. They help us preserve the stories and presence of loved ones.

Regular Monthly Daytime Guild Gathering
12 noon - 3pm

We have arranged a regular afternoon gathering each second Thursday from 12noon-3pm in addition to our regular evening zoom meeting. This is an opportunity to enjoy some of the social aspects of the Guild that people have really missed.

AVAILABLE ACTIVITIES ARE:

LIBRARY - Books available for loan, and BOOK SALE! Thanks to Mary Faria and team.

COMMUNITY PROJECTS - Pick up cradle kits and red/white/blue veterans fabric kits. Special thanks to Pamela Holst and Linda Estrada.

TREASURE TABLE - Please DON'T bring all eighteen months of stored up treasure to this first event!  Save some for future months. Carol Boyce our amazing clean-up lady would welcome help at the end packing up the remnants.

Also, we welcome any Satellite Groups that wish to meet in-person to use this opportunity!  Let Sam McIlraith our new Satellite Groups coordinator know and she will help work out details.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As per county guidelines,  everyone should wear a mask when indoors and we also request that everyone be responsible for getting out and putting away any chairs and tables.  In addition, our preference would be that all attendees are fully vaccinated.
